   Ah… problem with the Craiglist thing is that it doesn’t help anything at all. If anything, it makes the job of police much harder by creating a Napster effect and spreading the listings around. Treating the symptoms (or rather, disguising them) doesn’t fix the problem, it doesn’t eliminate the demand. It’s the digital equivalent to simply making homelessness or crime a little less visible, but not actually doing anything to fix the problems. =\

   Great point Blaise! I was sort of thinking the same thing. I’m not too into Craigslist, because the interface is not all that appealing. I am a graphic designer so these things matter to me. However, my brother is addicted to Craigslist! He is always trading/buying up laptops, fixing them, and then reselling them or retrading them on Craigslist.

   I know eBay had a problem for a while there of scammers offering you twice as much as your item is worth and then ask you to swiftly ship the item (PSP, Digital Cameras, or other electronics) to another country. RED FLAG! They usually tell you that they or a family member works for the U.S Embassy or something like that. It is frustrating because if you are trying to sell one of these items, the scammer “buys i now” and then you have to pay to realist the item. eBay will reimburse you, but after this happens several times, you pretty much want to give up on selling the item.

   I often wonder if there is a special place in hell just for scammers and spammers. I’m just sayin’.

   There is one scam that made me laugh. It was really quite brilliant:

   “I came across the ad that was for a prevailing wage job for $28.50 an hour,” said Mike, who saw a Craigslist ad last week looking for workers for a road maintenance project in Monroe.

   He said he inquired and was e-mailed back with instructions to meet near the Bank of America in Monroe at 11 a.m. Tuesday. He also was told to wear certain work clothing.

   “Yellow vest, safety goggles, a respirator mask…and, if possible, a blue shirt,” he said.

   Mike showed up along with about a dozen other men dressed like him, but there was no contractor and no road work to be done. He thought they had been stood up until he heard about the bank robbery and the suspect who wore the same attire.

   Yeah, that’s why Section 230 of the CDA is a good thing — the safe harbours provision. It protections service providers from liability for the illegal action of their users. Though, it’s still good if eBay takes pro-active measures to counter scammers because it wants to maintain trust among it’s users and integrity among its listings.
